I am constantly running around with samples and going to meetings throughout my work day, so it's important that I dress in clothes I can comfortably move around in. Although I am fortunate enough to work in an environment where sneakers are considered acceptable attire, I still need to balance my outfits for a professional look.
I am wearing a sneaker that is usually worn for sport, but is fabricated in velvet. This contrast creates the balance I am referring to. I love combinations like this, when unconventional fabrications are used on everyday pieces!
I also create the balance by wearing contrasting, yet complementary prints. My blazer is a glen plaid (dropping some FIDM knowledge on ya; Glen Plaid is a type of twill that has houndstooth woven within. How brilliant is that?!). Anyway, this one in particular has a rust colored stripe going through it that pops subtly against the muted florals of the slip dress.
I could never wear this slip dress alone to work. Magically, it feels like a nightgown. Realistically, it also looks like one if not paired with something over it. Thats where the blazer comes in. These two items paired together give me the look of comfortable professionalism I strive for.
Lastly, on the topic of balance, I choose simple jewelry. This guardian angel necklace I begged and begged my mother to let me wear (It's one her junior high school sweetheart gave to her). On my last trip home I finally convinced her to let me borrow it. I now can wear it everyday and everywhere without overshadowing my look.
This is the last of three photo sets that were taken inside the beautiful Volunteer Park Conservatory here in Seattle. My very talented friend and professional photographer, Elizabeth Podlesnik, had the idea to shoot inside and i'm very glad she did. Thanks, Beth. You can checkout more of her work here.
